The Death Comedy Jam: A History
Started in 2003 by Stand Up! Records Grammy Award winning founder Dan Schlissel, and bar back and 6 time open mic tryer Chris Maddock, the Death Comedy Jam got off to a ballistic start with local talent and others filling the list to try their stuff in front of audiences both big and not big.
Every Wednesday Over the next 15 years, notable comedy royalty coming through town would stop by and grace the stage, including Doug Stanhope, Daniel Tosh, Maria Bamford, Todd Glass, Todd Barry, Andy Kindler, Paul F. Tompkins, Hannibal Burress, Laurie Kilmartin, Mike Birbiglia, Tom Rhodes and many others. And yes, Fancy Ray McCloney!
The physical manifestation of Death (The Grin Reaper) would often make appearances or even host the show to give Chris a break from his emcee duties. Over the years, Chris turned into a good host, then a bad one again, then a great one twice, and went on to record two albums for Stand Up! Records and become a nationally touring comic in his own right.
“It’s the openest mic in town”, Chris will tell you. Everyone who signs up and gets the spelling on their name close gets time on stage. Chris is a marathon of funny. Meaning his nipples bleed and he poops his shorts.
